Epic Battle Between Dial Scales & Electronic Indication

A customer with a small meat locker called with a problem with his static monorail scale. His current static monorail scale was a lever system with a mechanical dial scale in need of major overhaul.

Although these scales are a marvel of aged ingenuity, it really isn’t cost effective to spend time and money in parts and labor to repair these large devices. Of course, that is a matter of opinion. Some people are persistent in their appreciation and desire to maintain and utilize older equipment. In today’s modern world of scale measurement equipment, unless minimal time and adjustment is required, older dial scales should be allocated to the museum as the relics in time that they are. Certainly, this type of scale, once repaired, may function for a long time without problems, but then again, it might not. At best, the customer would have a functional piece of 50 year old mechanical equipment.

The logical solution offered here, was to eliminate the large footprint of the old dial scale and mechanical lever system with the installation of a our single load-cell monorail and electronic indication. In some cases, when the lever system is in great shape, you can connect it to an electronic S – load-cell to be both efficient and economical. A load-cell can be soundly attached between the ceiling and lever assembly.  Thus the transverse lever, poise rod, and dial assembly can be completely eliminated.

As the static monorail lever system is still functional, incorporating the electronics of the weight indicating system will provide a rapid weight indication in a fraction of time and space previously required and adds the additional benefit of an electronic output of data. Thus, a cost effective solution to an existing problem is available.

Static Single Cell Monorails and Weight Stabilization Problems

Statically weighing carcasses from trolleys can sometimes be a difficult task because they don’t want to sit in one place during weighments. Special design consideration must be taken into account when using static monorail scales for this very reason.

Static Monorail Scale

Our static single cell monorail scale was specifically created to weigh one trolley at a time, and the best weight is given when the trolley is allowed to settle directly in the center of the rail. Typically, the scale rail is only about three inches long because that is all the space necessary to weigh a single trolley at one time.

The combination of a small contact area and a narrow space to center on, makes it very difficult to perfectly center the trolleys without some sort of aid. Because of this issue, we typically make an indentation on the rail at the very center that the trolleys can rest in. This keeps them from moving from side-to-side during weighment, and it centers the trolley on the scale more naturally.

Occasionally, companies prefer a more defined indentation in the rail, so that they don’t jump over the existing indentation. This essentially is not a problem, but if the indentation is expanded too far, it can cause the weighing process to be more of a hassle. A deep indentation would lock the trolley securely into place to be weighed, but it would also make removing it from that divot much more difficult. When doing this, there is also a slight risk that the components of the scale could receive more wear from the shock when the trolley enters and exits the indentation, so our advice is to not expand on it too much.

The static single cell monorail scale is a helpful tool for weight checking in rail-arounds and small volume operations, but it must be used correctly to ensure the highest accuracies. Static Single Cell Monorail Scales for a Variety of Businesses

There are quite a few businesses that use monorails to move carcasses through their plant, and monorail scales are a huge benefit to all of them. Monorail scales themselves come in many different forms and models for different situations, but a good monorail scale for any type of business is our static single cell monorail scale.

Static Monorail Scale

The static single cell monorail scale is used primarily in plants that handle beef, pork, lamb, and sometimes veal. Whether these plants are large producers or smaller specialty locker plants, there is most likely a use for something like this.

Large Plants
In large plants, the throughput is often too high to use a static scale as any sort of primary weighment, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t serve a purpose. The static monorail scale makes a good verification scale in a rail-off area.
When a plant needs confirmation that their in-motion monorail scale is working at peak accuracy, they can rail a carcass away from the main monorail and weigh it statically on this scale. This should provide them a highly accurate wait weight by which to judge the calibration of the other scale.

Medium-Sized Plants
In certain plants with lower throughput or without an automatic system, the static monorail scale can be used in a more primary fashion. We have seen some plants use the scale as their main hot scale.
It provides very accurate weighments and can be made out of stainless steel or painted steel, which promises that the strength will be able to stand up to very heavy use.

Small Locker Plants
Some plants don’t have to deal with a very high volume of product. This especially comes up when dealing with very specialized meat or with your average small butcher shop. In a situation like this, a static single cell monorail scale could be the perfect scale for all of their weighments.

A locker plant could be selling a product like deer meat. The carcasses are not terribly heavy and the demand is not as high as beef or pork. A static scale is perfect for this size because they are likely not handling more than one or two carcasses at a time. It can be used for an incoming weight and a hot and cold scale.

A scale does not necessarily have to be automatic to fit a purpose in the meat industry, so if you fit any of these situations, don’t hesitate to contact us about how this particular scale could work for you.

Static Multi-Cell Monorail Problem Recognition

Time and strain can become evident when a difference is apparent in trolley movement from one side to the other of a multi cell static monorail.   The scale is basically a tuned instrument from one end of the live weighment rail to the other.

When two load cells are utilized to suspend the live rail, they should be able to be matched or tuned to read the same weight indication repeatedly.  This should be verified by using certified test weights to check the scale operation on a frequent and recurrent basis.  If the weight is not correct from one end to the other, adjustment may be possible at the summing card if weighment error appears consistent.  Just as with people, not all parts wear down the same way.

monorail scale

This type of problem could be attributed to simple metal fatigue or electrical properties internally.  The good sign, however, is that the apparent problem appears consistent, thus it is possible for it to be corrected by simple adjustment and calibration.

When the weight indication is not consistent and is grossly incorrect on one side as opposed to the other side, a load cell or summing board is most likely at fault.  Load cells have an internal strain gauge, and as alluded above, the strain over time can sometimes be fatal, and load cell replacement is required. Maintenance people sometimes check for this situation by testing load cells for correct resistance values.   Consistent and large error weight indications across a load cell are often a good indication it’s time for a change.  When problems are specific and consistent, they can sometimes be easy to identify and subsequently rectify.

Smokehouse Monorail Scales

The stainless steel smokehouse static rail scale is what we call the multi cell static monorail scale. If you are looking for a smokehouse scale, please read on; you will like what you read!

The multi-cell static monorail scale is built to meet your specific needs: it is not a model off of the shelf.

Very few applications are the same, there are single trolley trees and there are double trolley trees.

monorail scale

The number of trolleys and the space between the trolleys determines what kind of a scale you need as well as the capacity of the scale.

Our scale will be designed and built to meet your specific needs.

The scale has a capacity of as little as 1000 lbs and up to 4000 lbs,  with up to 5000 divisions.

The rail length can vary from 18 inches out to 48 inches.

The scale can be designed to accommodate single and double trolley trees and the unit is built out of stainless steel to withstand the harsh environments they are in.

The scale is easily installed by cutting 18” (or your specific rail size), out of your rail and welding it into place.

We would prefer that you supply us with a portion of your rail for an exact match.

A number of different indicators can be used in conjunction with the scale.

Indicators are a versatile part of the system.

If you just need to see a weight, it can easily be displayed with a simple indicator.

If you need the weight recorded and printed, attach a printer to the indicator.

If you need the weight sent to a database for recording, this can be done as well.

Indicators are available to meet any need you may have!
